Winner of 12 Grammy Awards and a nominee for a further 39 Grammys, Michael Tilson Thomas has conducted more than 120 recordings, spanning repertoire from Bach and Beethoven to Debussy and Stravinsky, and including collaborations with artists ranging from Sarah Vaughan to Metallica. As he turned 80, Gramophone honoured Tilson Thomas with the Gramophone Lifetime Achievement Award to “celebrate the conductor and composer whose impact on musical life and on millions of listeners has been transformative.”

In further celebration of his 80th birthday, Pentatone released the four-disc set Grace that spans more than five decades of Michael Tilson Thomas’ compositional career. It features 18 works, from premiere recordings to remastered archival recordings available for the first time. The deluxe collection also includes an extensive booklet containing composer’s notes, original essays, and a timeline of archival photos chronicling MTT’s life as a pianist, conductor, composer, recording artist, and teacher.
Grace garnered widespread critical acclaim in 2024, earning several of the year’s most prestigious classical music honours. Gramophone Magazine selected Grace as an Editor’s Choice in its Awards Issue, a mark of distinction reserved for the most exceptional new recordings. The album was further celebrated by being named among Gramophone’s Best Classical Music Albums of 2024, underscoring its artistic significance. In addition, Grace was shortlisted as a finalist for Presto Music’s Recordings of the Year, securing its place among the top 100 releases that captivated critics and audiences alike.
